LAURETTE TAYLOR (1883 - 1946)

Of course I consider her the greatest artist of her profession that I have known.
- Tennessee Williams.
Laurette Taylor will be remembered for both her role in Vaudeville as the lead in the comedic play Peg O' My Heart and for her Broadway role as the mother in Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie . Peg O' My Heart would inspire a 1912 hit song by the same name. It was the same song that would be covered by the Dropkick Murphys a century later. Her Pulitzer Prize winning portrayal of Tennessee's overbearing mom Amanda Wingfield is looked at as the finest acting in the history of the stage.
