CURTIS MAYFIELD (1923 – 1992)
MUSIC :::
Chicago's mid-sixties act The Impressions delivered one of the civil rights greatest musical moments with the gospel tinged People Get Ready. It featured a honeysoaked voice that evoked the great Sam Cooke who had recently departed. When blaxploitation films were all the rage in the early 70s, Curtis delivered one of the finest soundtracks in the history of film for Superfly. He would be paralyzed by a falling light truss while on stage in 1990 but his voice could not be silenced.
