Any Battle Won
Last Stand began in 1984 with a split Taang! single shared with Noonday Underground: “Injun Joe” and “Scum Guns.” The three-song Coup d’état EP followed in 1985 with “Violent Solution,” “Where I Live” and “JFK.” From the start, the band combined the direct force of punk with the melodic instincts of Boston groups such as the Real Kids and DMZ.
One Way released the ten-song Approved Cuts in 1986 and Faith in Fate in 1988. Both were recommended by Maximum Rocknroll. The two albums were combined into the twenty-song Boston Callin’ for a European Oi! Records edition near the end of the decade, then digitally mastered by Marisa T. Dery at the Tape Complex for One Way’s January 1, 1999 American release.
After a mid-1990s hiatus, Last Stand returned for a sold-out 1998 reunion at T.T. the Bear’s Place. The reunion led to Any Battle Won, seven new songs recorded between April and September 2000 at Woolly Mammoth. David Minehan produced; Toby Mountain mastered the album at Northeastern Digital. One Way released it November 4, 2000.
The catalog moves through political anger, working-class pressure, humor and rock-and-roll release without abandoning songs. That balance explains why Last Stand could sit naturally beside the Bosstones, the Outlets, John Felice and Shake the Faith on One Way compilations. “Any Battle Won” and “Who’s That?” appear on Dig the Boston Underground; “Wood & Steel,” “Who’s That?” and “Grey” appear on Boston Retroactive.
Last Stand resurfaced for later Boston performances, including reunion sets documented at T.T.’s and Johnny D’s. The One Way pages now gather the recorded arc rather than freezing the band at the 2000 release: Taang!, two recommended albums, European circulation, reunion and return.
