Live at Room 9
5 Star Day was recorded live at Room 9 in Boston by Ducky Carlisle, the producer, engineer and drummer whose work also runs through Barrence Whitfield and the wider Boston rock-and-roll community. Natalie Flanagan sang, played guitar and wrote the songs; Pat McDonald played lap steel, Dimitri Fane played bass and Ken Schopf played drums.
The performances resisted a single category. The original One Way notes placed the record between garage punk, indie rock, The Pretenders and Mazzy Star. Online listeners heard still more possibilities. “Number One” entered MP3.com’s Garage top ten and held its number-one position for nearly three weeks in early 2000. “As I Do” charted in New Country and reached number one in Massachusetts, while the remaining songs circulated through Garage and Indie Pop Lo-Fi listings.
Those chart categories now read like artifacts from an earlier internet, but they document something important: before streaming platforms standardized discovery, these recordings found listeners through independent digital channels. 5 Star Day was simultaneously a live Boston document, a One Way CD and an early online release.
