The Route 1 photographs are not illustrations of the journey. They are evidence: buildings, signs, faces, damage, memorials and accidental compositions gathered between Key West and Fort Kent.
Berenice Abbott photographed U.S. Route 1 in 1954 as a changing American structure. The Motherlode black-and-whites return to that discipline: true monochrome, strong geometry, readable shadows and no nostalgia imposed where the evidence can speak for itself.
Neon stays in color. Motel signs, package stores, music rooms and roadside businesses form a second nighttime map of the highway—commercial language transformed into accidental public art.
The Route 1 plaques identify musicians, witnesses, institutions and discoveries encountered along the way. Together they form a people’s monument stretched across the Eastern Seaboard.
Each Field Report will contribute its complete photographic sequence here while retaining a focused selection inside the report itself. Key West, Waycross, Columbia, Raleigh, and Richmond now open onto their field reports and photographic records; further stops will be added as their archives are organized.
