In 1954, Hurricane Carol tore through New England, ripping roofs from buildings, flooding streets and leaving Boston to pick through the wreckage. It makes a pretty good place to begin Boston Babylon. Because another storm was already gathering offshore—Alan Freed, doo-wop, payola, folkies, acid, Beatles, Stones, punks, mobsters, disco queens and beautiful degenerates, all headed toward a city that had spent centuries trying to keep its collar buttoned.
