Made in Boston is the production arm of Boston 400, transforming the city’s cultural evidence into new exhibits, publications, broadcasts, performances, installations and objects. Each project begins somewhere inside Boston’s history—but it does not end there. Archival material is placed in the hands of contemporary artists, writers, musicians, historians and cultural workers who use it to create something that could only have been made here.
Drawn from more than two million objects preserved by the David Bieber Archives, these projects connect original photographs, recordings, newspapers, posters, advertisements, correspondence and ephemera with the people and places still carrying Boston’s cultural memory. Some will exist online. Others will occupy galleries, clubs, storefronts, streets and unexpected corners of the city.
Boston For the Record begins with a landmark piece of music journalism and expands it into a living exhibition. The 12 Stations of the Rat turns a vanished nightclub into a cultural pilgrimage through twelve encounters with its history, artifacts and mythology. Together, they demonstrate the central principle of Made in Boston: the archive is not the final resting place of history. It is raw material for whatever Boston makes next.
